Getting started

Who qualifies for medical cannabis in Florida?

Florida's program is open to residents 21 and older with one of several qualifying conditions: chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, migraines, cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, Parkinson's disease, ALS, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, and a handful of others.

A Florida-licensed physician makes the formal determination. Our 60-second eligibility quiz is a preliminary screen — it tells you whether you're likely to qualify before you book a consultation.

How long does the whole process take?

Most patients receive temporary ID approval within 24 to 72 hours of completing the telehealth consultation. The physical card from the Florida Department of Health arrives within two to three weeks by mail. The eligibility quiz itself takes about 60 seconds.

How much does it cost?

The state ID card application fee is $75 per year. The physician consultation fee varies by provider — typically separate from the state fee. Cannabis Miami's eligibility quiz is free.

Do I need to be in Florida to qualify?

You need to be a Florida resident or seasonal resident (31+ consecutive days per year). Out-of-state visitors are not eligible for the Florida program. If you're moving to Florida, establish residency first, then apply.

At the dispensary

Do I need a card just to walk in?

Yes. Florida law requires a valid Medical Marijuana Use Registry ID card to enter and purchase from any licensed dispensary. Most shops will not even seat you for a consultation without one.

What's the difference between indica and sativa?

Indica is associated with relaxation and bedtime use; sativa with focus and daytime use. The truth is that effect depends more on terpene profile and dose than on subspecies, but the labels remain a useful shorthand. See our primer for first-time patients for more.

What dose should a first-time patient start with?

Most physicians recommend starting with 2.5 to 5 milligrams of THC, particularly with edibles, and waiting at least two hours before consuming more. The standard guidance is "start low, go slow." Your prescribing physician will give a specific recommendation.

What formats are available?

Flower, pre-rolls, vaporizer cartridges, tinctures, capsules, edibles, and topicals. Tinctures are the most precise-dosing format and a good starting place for new patients. See the glossary for a deeper breakdown.

About this site

Are you affiliated with the dispensaries you list?

No. Cannabis Miami is an independent editorial guide. We do not currently accept paid listings, sponsorships, or affiliate kickbacks. If that ever changes, sponsored content will be clearly marked as such.

Are prices and hours always current?

We verify at the time of publication, but dispensaries change their hours, addresses, and inventory frequently. Always confirm directly with the shop before visiting. If you spot something out of date, email Hello@cannabismiami.com.

How do I get my shop listed?

If you operate a licensed Florida MMTC, email Hello@cannabismiami.com with your operator name and primary contact. We verify license status before any listing goes live.

How do I subscribe to updates?

Our newsletter, The Dispatch, ships every two weeks — new shop openings, neighborhood guides, the occasional invitation. Sign up at the bottom of any page on the site. One-click unsubscribe in every email.

Travel & reciprocity

Can I bring my Florida card to another state?

Most medical cannabis states do not recognize Florida cards. A handful — New Hampshire, Maine, and Pennsylvania among them — offer limited reciprocity. Always check the destination state's rules before traveling. The TSA does not screen for cannabis specifically but federal law still prohibits transport across state lines.

Can I use a card from another state in Florida?

No. Florida does not honor out-of-state medical cannabis cards. Visitors must establish Florida residency and apply through the state's program before purchasing.
